28 Feb Two Irish Writers Guests at the Belgrade Irish Festival
Rob Doyle, an award-winning younger-generation Irish writer, and Theo Dorgan, one of the most renowned poets in the country, will be guests at this year’s Belgrade Irish Festival. Both authors will read excerpts from their works and engage with the Belgrade audience.
Rob Doyle will spend a month in Belgrade as a guest of the literary residency organized by BIF for the first time this year, in collaboration with “Krokodil,” with support from Literature Ireland from Dublin.
A native of Dublin, Doyle is the author of four internationally successful books. His debut novel, “Here Are the Young Men,” was adapted into a film of the same name. He has also published novels “Threshold” and “This is the Ritual,” a collection of short stories. During a month in Belgrade, he will continue working on his new novel.
Doyle will interact with readers at “Krokodil” during the festival days, with the date and time to be announced later.
Poet Theo Dorgan will also make his first appearance before the Serbian audience at this year’s BIF. Dorgan is also a translator, essayist, documentarian, and participates in the film section of the program at BIF.
Theo Dorgan will read his poetry at the “Krokodil” center on Saturday, March 16, at 12 o’clock noon. The day before (March 15, at 6 pm at the Kinoteka, Kosovska 11), he will engage with the audience after the screening of the film “The Laughing Boy,” for which he wrote the script and serves as the narrator.
On the day before the closing of BIF, on Sunday, March 17, at noon, at the “Krokodil” center, two longtime friends, Mark Kiting, an Irishman living in Serbia since the 1990s, and Jovan Memedović, a renowned television author, will discuss the connections between Serbia and Ireland and the similarities and differences between our two nations.
Literary topics are also part of BIF’s film program. Two films by Irish director Alan Gilsenan – “Ulysses” and “The Ghosts of Bagnio” – are scheduled for screening on March 12 at the Kinoteka in Kosovska 11.
